Netflix is launching a new cheaper streaming option with adverts as it fights to keep viewers during the cost of living crisis.

15 or 30 seconds ads will play before and during shows and films for an average of 4 to 5 minutes per hour, the company said.

The Basic with Ads tier will be limited to 720p/HD, the same as Netflix’s Basic plans and some films and TV series also will not be available due to licensing restrictions.

The new tier will cost £4.99 a month in the UK and will also be available in the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Spain.

“We’re confident that … we now have a price and plan for every fan,” the company said in a press release. 

“While it’s still very early days, we’re pleased with the interest from both consumers and the advertising community and couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead.”
