Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a “national rejuvenation,” on Thursday, starting with removing “effeminate,” men from broadcast television.

China’s TV regulator said that broadcasters must “resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal aesthetics,” using the term, “niang pao,” a slur for men roughly translating to, “girlie guns.”

The country fears influence from neighbours South Korea and Japan where porcelain faces have become a pop culture phenomenon will emasculate the younger generations. 

This isn’t the first time China’s “girly” men have gotten flak from the state. In the past, authorities have gone as far as censoring male earrings on TV and tying “Little Fresh Meat” (an internet buzz word in China used to describe handsome young males) to a CIA plot to feminize the country’s men.

Business, education, culture and religion are all under the microscope as the communist party tries to realign the China to its values.
