Reading based rapper Songer is an artist who has fast risen in the UK and International scene, slowly captivating a growing and loyal audience. Last week saw the 23 year old perform two London headline shows to finish off his tour, and here’s what went down inside…
Performing at London’s prestigious Scala venue, who also links to his new album entitled ‘SKALA’, Songer put on an electrifying display of musical prowess and captivating stage presence, delivering a performance that defied expectations and left the audience in awe. The night was an unforgettable showcase of his musical journey, showcasing freestyles from the earliest moments in his career, as well as newer music from his most recent projects.
From the moment Songer stepped on stage, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation. The venue was filled to full capacity way before the Reading based prodigy even stepped on stage; when he came out his commanding presence and magnetic charisma reverberated the venue and charged up the audience into encapsulation. Having been heavily praised for his lyrical eloquence that explores topics of sentimental depth such as mental health and personal loss, the setlist showcased his ability to balance playful baselines with profound and deeply personal narratives.
My attendance was a fine balance of a work and fan experience; ‘The Sunrise Project’ in particular holds great sentimental value to myself as I resonate with some of the heartfelt topics on the album. “I’d Rather You Cheat” hit me deep as it did the other 1150 people in the venue as well as ‘Endlessly’ and an array of other deep moving tunes. The carefully curated setlist took the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, building anticipation and delivering cathartic moments that left the crowd yearning for more. Notably, the switch up between genres looked effortless, with a setlist equally infusing aspects of drum and bass, garage, rap and jazz. Heartfelt conversations in-between songs created layers of intimacy between himself and his loyal audience; an atmosphere of unity and shared experiences was subsequently created making the environment immaculate.
To conclude, it’s worth noting that Songer played a very respectable set that weighted in at almost two hours – a true grafter. Songer’s Skala performance was a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and touch the soul. Etched in the memories of those fortunate enough to get tickets before they quickly sold out, the night was visual proof of the musical empire that Songer has created, and the impact he has had on the UK rap scene.
