The world of the Jetsons draws ever closer as the world’s first flying car company has started accepted pre-orders following government approval.
Alef Aeronautics‘s vehicle of the future titled the “Model A” was granted legal permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to test run the vehicle on the road and in the sky.
Combining street driving and vertical take-off capabilities, the fully electric car carries up to two occupants and will sell for about $300,000 (£236,394).
Alef becomes the first company to receive a Special Airworthiness Certification from the FAA but will also need to meet National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration safety standards before taking flight.
CEO Jim Dukhovny said in a press release, “[The approval] allows us to move closer to bringing people an environmentally friendly and faster commute, saving individuals and companies hours each week. This is one small step for planes, one giant step for cars.”
A $150 (£118)deposit needed to join the general queue, or a $1,500 (£1,183) deposit to get priority access for the car which is expected to touch the skies as early as 2025 if all testing and approval goes as planned.
