Last year Stormzy was widely celebrated for providing Glastonbury festivals crowd with a legendary performance, aligned with his upcoming [at the time] album “Heavy Is The Head.”
For his set, the rapper enlisted the unidentifiable and notorious artist, Banksy, to design a stab-proof vest. The result, was a moody Union Jack flag spray painted on the garment, which is now up to be nominated for the prestigious Beazley Designs of the Year Award. The vest was worn as a statement, drawing attention to the crippling influx of knife crime in Great Britain. Stormzy also focused his time on stage to raise awareness and speak out on the unjust treatment of young Black youth, who are often targeted by a biased judicial system.
Stormzy and Banksy’s vest is one of 74 nominees; speaking on the piece Banks describes it as, “capable of stopping bullets up to 45 calibre and is fully stab proof, yet not machine washable.”
The winner will be announced by London’s Design Museum next month.
