Our Score Predictions Ahead Of Premier League GW2

Joe Simpson

The Premier League threw up a few surprises last week as the 2023/24 season got underway. Here are our predictions for what looks set to be a blockbuster second gameweek:

Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United

The Friday night fixture promises to be an interesting clash. Despite a tough start, Nottingham Forest showed some promise, and losing 2-1 to Arsenal isn’t a bad result. Anthony Elanga impressed down the wing and the East Midlands side will be hoping he has another good game today. Matt Turner also made a few saves last time out and how well he plays will be crucial to the result. For the Northerners, it was a disappointing 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace where they were dominated and had just one shot on target. Tom Davies is a decent signing with Premier League experience, but there is still plenty of work to do in the transfer market.

I remain unconvinced by this Sheffield United side and last week they proved the doubters correct. Forest meanwhile won’t have an easy season, but they have made some smart business. They have the edge here and home advantage, which should get them over the line.

Score Prediction: Nottingham Forest 1-0 Sheffield United

Fulham vs Brentford

Looking to take momentum from their first win of the season over Everton, Fulham host Brentford in a Saturday mid-afternoon kick off. This fixture is definitely going to be tight-knit, with both sides good in possession with ruthless speed of attack on the counter.

Looking at the predicted lineups for both teams, I can’t see there being too much between the two sides on the day. Brentford played out the park for a 2-2 draw against Tottenham last weekend, with many positives to take from the game, whereas Fulham demonstrated their game management strengths and defensive qualities with their clean sheet.

I do however envision this to be a very open game with an excess of chances – both sides will need their forward line to be on top form. In terms of predictions, it’s difficult to decipher between either side winning by a single goal, or for the points to be split between the sides by full time. In the end, I’m opting for the latter.

Score Prediction : Fulham 2-2 Brentford

Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Liverpool return to Anfield on Saturday hoping to secure their first victory of the new season against a Bournemouth side who many expect to finish close to the relegation zone. An entertaining opening day battle at the Bridge against Chelsea demonstrated that the Reds still possess an offensive cutting edge, but lack a defensive identity in transitions that would be solved with the addition of a defensive midfielder.

The Cherries are not all too dissimilar from Jurgen Klopp’s team in terms of strengths and weaknesses, albeit on a smaller scale. The loss of Jefferson Lerma has left Andoni Iraola without a recognised number 6, with both managers addressing this issue in the transfer window this week. However, Wataru Endo and Tyler Adams will not be available for this fixture.

You can expect a similar back and forth tie to the entertaining one that Liverpool and Chelsea served up last week, but Liverpool’s better quality across the pitch should give them enough to take this one.

Score Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth

Wolves vs Brighton

Despite all the turmoil behind the scenes, Wolves gave Manchester United a tough time on Monday night and were only a bad refereeing decision away from taking a point. Gary O’Neil looks like he may steady the ship for now with Mario Lemina slotting in nicely to replace Rúben Neves. Matheus Cunha who is now a permanent member of the squad also impressed, but he will have to add goals to his game.

Brighton took new boys Luton to the cleaners with a sensational 4-1 victory that showed why this side made it to Europe last season. João Pedro already looks like a quality signing and Evan Ferguson continues his promise of being a future star. Moisés Caicedo is a huge loss, but Brighton still appear to be a confident side that will continue on their current trajectory. Wolves will make it difficult, but I expect Brighton to show their power and come away with another victory.

Score Prediction: Wolves 0-2 Brighton

Spurs vs Manchester United

I think many Manchester United fans would be surprised by just how far off the pace their team seemed against Wolves on Monday night. Going up against opposition many tipped to be battling the relegation spots, Erik Ten Hag’s side were overrun in midfield and lacked any kind of cutting edge going forward.

Spurs on the other hand seem to be prepared for a period of transition under Ange Postecoglou, picking up a point in a solid performance against a plucky Brentford side. James Maddison was impressive in an advanced role, and he will need to be at the top of his game if his side are going to get anything out of this fixture.

United started last season slowly and need to pick things up early on here if they are serious about challenging at the top. Even without Kane, I think Spurs can cause them problems at the back, hopefully leading to an exciting encounter in North London.

Score Prediction: Spurs 2-2 Manchester United

Manchester City vs Newcastle United

The champions gave Burnley a rude awakening on their return to the top flight, with Erling Haaland once again proving to be a goal machine. Despite losing key players and the injury of Kevin De Bruyne, this City side looks as strong as ever.

In the meantime, Newcastle took advantage of injuries to give Aston Villa a spanking at home. Alexander Isak looks like he will take the league by storm this year, while Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali are already on course to be some top-class business. The Geordies are coming together nicely, and I believe people have underestimated how good they will be this year.

Many will remember the thrilling 3-3 draw last year and this will be another entertaining game. Both sides have solid defences, but the attacking talent on display will be too much for either team and will give us a thrilling close Saturday’s action.

Score Prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Newcastle

Aston Villa vs Everton

Aston Villa’s optimism heading into the new season was swiftly swept aside thanks to a 5-1 opening day smackdown away at Newcastle, coupled with an ACL injury to captain Tyrone Mings. Everton were the better team against Fulham but really lack the required cutting edge up front.

With new CF Youssef Chermiti an unknown entity it’s hard to be confident in Sean Dyche’s teams ability to find the back of the net. In any case, for both sides one game will not define their season but with the quality of recruitment, coach, and extra motivation to bounce back, Villa should be looking to make a statement against a ponderous Everton side.

Score Prediction: Aston Villa 4-1 Everton

West Ham vs Chelsea

Off the back of a very competitive draw with Liverpool, Chelsea will definitely be going into this fixture as favourites, however it would be silly to write West Ham off.

Regarding lineups, the recent injury news of new captain Reece James has proven to be tough for the defensive line, adding to the list of injuries in the Chelsea camp. However, on the positive side, they’ll be looking to hand British transfer record signing Moises Caicedo his debut on Sunday afternoon, who will undoubtedly be a very strong addition to the side. West Ham drew to Bournemouth last week, however a brilliant individual performance from Jarrod Bowen drew attention to the side; David Moyes will be hoping that Bowen can find his finishing boots yet again and produce some magic to inspire his team this weekend. I can see this game being a very tough fixture with Chelsea still adapting to a new style of play and West Ham having more continuity at the start of this season as a result of their dry transfer window.

Score Prediction : West Ham 1-2 Chelsea

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal

Having seen off Sheffield United and repelled Chelsea’s advances for starlet Micheal Olise, Palace should be feeling pretty good about themselves. No longer reliant on Wilfried Zaha, this season is all about finding the balance as a cohesive collective under Roy Hodgson.

Whether down to fitness or just losing their way after Jurrien Timber’s potential season ending injury, Arsenal made much harder work of their victory at home to Nottingham Forest. With their summer transfers still not fully assimilated and the team shape still up for experimentation, the ability to win regardless is a good omen.

Despite being at the fortress that is Selhurst Park, Palace are facing one of Europe’s top teams. Arsenal should be able to handle anything Palace throw at them and be too much for the home team to stop even in the most hostile of territories.

Score Prediction: Crystal Palace 0-2  Arsenal
