A Muslim billionaire has won permission to turn a famous London landmark into a mosque.
Known as Mr West End, 56-year-old, Asif Aziz, has been given the go ahead to convert Trocadero into a 1,000-capacity mosque in the centre of the capital.
The property tycoon who bought the famous landmark for over £220 million in 2005 originally planned to build the mosque back in 2020 but halted after backlash from far-right groups and some residents.
“A planning application by the Aziz Foundation to convert a part of the London Trocadero was approved by the council’s planning committee in May 2023,” a council spokesperson said.
Expected to be named the “Piccadilly Prayer Space” the three-storey 390 capacity venue could welcome worshipers within months.
Aziz’s foundation wants the mosque to serve tourists and Muslims working in the area.
The Trocadero, an iconic entertainment complex dating back to 1896 was once home to the London Pavilion Theatre, SegaWorld and the UK’s first 3D IMAX cinema.
