Instagram Says It’s Working On Bringing Back The Chronological Timeline

Jesse Williams

The algorithmically sorted feed, introduced in 2016, and then updated in 2017 with “recommended posts”, has been widely panned by users.

The picture sharing platform considers its current AI based system to be a more personalised experience, based on users’ activity but that is about to change.

Testifying at congress it was revealed that the company has been working on adding a chronological option to the Instagram app “for months”.

CEO Adam Mosseri said in a statement:

“It’s important to me that people have meaningful control over their experience, and I believe a place where you can see everything from the accounts you follow in chronological order is an important thing,”

Mosseri added, “We’re currently working on a version of a chronological feed that we hope to launch next year.”

The algorithm will still be around however it will no longer be mandatory, with Instagram aiming to offer different options on how to sort your timeline. Users will be able to prioritise more recent posts or posts from your favourite accounts etc.

Will you be switching back to the chronological timeline next year ?
