Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been prosecuted for “importing more than 1300 kilos of cocaine”, according reports in the Netherlands.
The Public Prosecution Service suspects Promes and the co-defendant of importing two batches of cocaine via the Western Scheldt and the Port of Antwerp in January 2020.
The first batch involved 650 blocks of cocaine, each weighing one kilogram and the second batch totalling more than 712 kilograms.
The 31-year-old’s arrest had not been made public before Tuesday, taken into police custody in Krommenie on April 25 on suspicion of drug trafficking and money laundering.
Promes was already facing trial in the Netherlands for stabbing a cousin during a fight after a family reunion in Abcoude, near Amsterdam, in July 2020.
Initially charged with attempted murder, prosecutors concluded that there was insufficient evidence to establish that his goal was to kill the victim.
June 5 will see the District Court in Amsterdam hold the first pre-trial hearing for the new case, which Promes will not attend due to contractual obligations at his Russian football club, Spartak Moscow.
