A company is offering people a free 4k tv if you agree to have a second smaller tv that constantly plays ads.
Telly, the brainchild of the co-founder of free video-streaming Pluto TV Ilya Pozin will reportedly ship out thousands of free 55inch 4K HDTVs in an effort to revolutionise how consumers watch tv.
The second smaller screen will play targeted advertising as well as displaying information including news, sports scores, weather and stocks.
“We are putting an end to the decades long practice of double-dipping on the consumer, where the consumer is being charged for the television and then have the TV manufacturer turn around and make billions of dollars off of selling the advertising and data from that television without providing the consumer any value,” Telly chief strategy officer Dallas Lawrence told the press. “We believe that the consumer should share that value proposition.”
Those eligible to receive the free dual-screen TV will have to agree to share their viewing and activity data with the company.
“You’re giving us your demographics, your psychographics at the individual and household level before you even get your device, so we know who you are, we know where you live, we know your income, we know what car you’re driving, we know when your lease is up,” Ilya Pozin, founder and CEO of Telly
If you are selected and then later opt out, the TV must be returned or you will be charged £402 ($500).
Planning to ship out 500,000 of its dual-screen TV sets, more than 100,000 have reportedly signed up for the scheme.
