Apple Discontinues The iPod

Jesse Williams

Apple has discontinued its revolutionary iPod, 20 years after it was released.

Debuted in 2001 by late Apple founder Steve Jobs, it was the first MP3 player able to hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

They soon followed up with 6 models of the portable music player, including the iconic iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle both released in 2005.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said: “Today, the spirit of iPod lives on,”

“We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

“And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio – there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.”

Apple has said The iPod Touch, the only version currently being sold will remain available to buy “while stocks last”.
