Sunny Singh Gill Is Set To Become The First British South Asian To Referee A Premier League Match

Jesse Williams

Sunny Singh Gill will become the first British South Asian to referee a Premier League match.

The football official will make history when he takes charge of Crystal Palace and Luton Town fixture this weekend.

Sunny previously made history earlier this year when he became the first British South Asian to referee a game between two Premier League teams during Brighton’s FA Cup fourth round victory at Sheffield United in January.

His father, Jarnail Singh, was the first EFL referee to wear a turban when he took charge of Bristol Rovers vs Bury in August 2004. Singh senior refereed almost 200 EFL matches up before retiring in 2010.

Sunny will now be the seventh referee outside of PGMOL’s (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) Select Group to take charge of a Premier League match this season, following Sam Allison, Sam Barrott, Bobby Madley, Josh Smith, Rebecca Welch and Lewis Smith.
