England’s Captain Wayne Rooney who has just been retained by new manager Sam Allardyce as captain of the England national team, has confirmed that he will be retiring from international football after the 2018 World Cup that is set to take place in Russia.
Rooney spoke out during a press conference where he announced his plans of leaving after the World Cup. He said, “Realistically I know myself that Russia will be my last opportunity to do anything with England. Hopefully I can end my time with England on a high.”
“I said before the Euros I enjoyed playing in this team, and that’s the case still. There were some questions about whether I should stop playing, but I am looking forward to getting back on the pitch.”
“I made my mind up before the Euros, whether we did well or not, that I was going to continue. I’ve had nothing to think about since then.”
He finished off by saying, “My mind is made up … Russia will be my last tournament.”
The new manager has said that he looks to play Rooney as a number 10 in the same way as Jose Mourinho does at Manchester United.
Rooney believes, “It’s the manager’s decision. We haven’t spoken about it but I’m sure we will in the next few days, I’m ready to play whether it’s midfield or elsewhere.”
“It’s early days in the camp – we’ve only been here a day. We’ll find out how Sam wants us to play in certain games, but I’m looking forward to it, to see what type of training sessions he’ll do”.
