Read the Guardian’s interview between Rodney P and Kojey Radical: ‘I don’t want my son to always have to fight’

Rehana Harmony

Journalist

In the Guardian’s series ‘of cross-generational conversations between black artists’, the pair have met up for a noteworthy discussion about growing up subjected to micro-aggressions, racism, identity issues, police brutality and how to move forward as a people.

This a necessary read and an insightful article that details the perspectives of two champions from two different generations, who have both consciously injected a dose of black empowerment, rebellion introspection into their music.

50-year-old Rodney P was responsible for driving the evolution of UK rap during the 80s and 90s – he was also one of the first artists to use their real accents in their music. Kojey Radical, 27, an artist who ran away with norms of his genre and has delivered rap with substance, by incorporating a range of musical influences (for example, funk) and reflective, spoken word to log his experiences as a black man in Britain.
