“Make sure you love what you do and then everything else will be worth it” In Conversation With Domani

Mixtape Madness Team

Domani has been making waves in the music industry with his unique style and powerful lyrics. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Domani is the son of legendary rapper and actor T.I. and has been immersed in the world of music from a young age. He began his career as a rapper and songwriter in his teenage years and has since released a string of acclaimed mixtapes and albums, showcasing his distinctive lyrical style and thoughtful storytelling.

Beyond his music, Domani is also a talented actor and has appeared in several films and TV shows, including the hit series “Atlanta” created by his father. He is also an activist and community organizer, using his platform to raise awareness about important social and political issues.

Domani! We last spoke in LA, how have you been since then?

I’ve been amazing. Just working on music.

You just released ‘I Did It’. Congratulations on its early success. What was the creative process behind it?

I recorded the first part of the beat a couple of months ago and I’ve just been listening to it ever since. I wanted to finish it but I felt like I wanted another vibe so I switched the beat and finally finished it. That’s how it turned out to be what it is today.

You recently came off tour with Cordae. What was that like?

Europe has always shown me, love. We were over there in Europe and Cordae is just a dope person. His team are dope people. Every time I go on tour with somebody, their team becomes family, you know, and Cordae was the exact same. It was a dope experience and just felt good to be back in Europe.

What’s the most challenging thing about being on tour?

Trying to experience the cities that you’re in. There’s a lot of moving. You might go to your hotel, take a shower, get dressed, then you have soundcheck. After soundcheck, it’s a couple of hours before the show. So it’s really kind of hard to sit down and take in the scenery and experience the place or the city that you’re in. I would say that, and then just being away from home.

Speaking of home, you’ve said in the past how your dad T.I. was one of your inspirations to start music. What was it like growing up with such a recognised father?

Man, I really don’t know, I’ve always seen him as just dad, you know. He’s always been pops until we go outside and then we see the reaction from other people. But inside the house, he’s always just been pops and he’s definitely given us a lot of knowledge, a lot of dope information like any parent would. But I would just sit in the studio with him growing up, watching him create the music that the world showed a bunch of love to. I think that’s where the inspiration came from, just saying his work ethic.

What’s the best piece of advice he’s given?

Take it seriously. He said that at a very young age. At the time, I didn’t understand it. A lot of people don’t really realise that this is not promised, anything can happen. So, if someone comes out and spends their hard-earned money to see you or listen to you or support you, that means a lot.

Do you ever feel any kind of pressure to live up to the success of your dad?

Not necessarily. I just like making music and I feel like that translates.

What was it like growing up in Atlanta and how has it influenced your music? Atlanta can be a scary place but it’s also an iconic hub for music. So how was it growing up there?

I feel like Atlanta can always be scary to some people but it’s always been home. Just Georgia in general, everyone feels like cousins when you go outside. To me personally, everyone feels like extended family. It’s like a small home in a small world and everybody seems like they know each other. More people are more likely to work with each other out here. I think it’s easier to make friends here, it’s easier to collab out here. There’s also a lot of originality in Atlanta, as well as a lot of successful people that look like me.

Are there any Atlanta artists that you really want to jump in the studio with?

Got to get with JID and GRIP. He’s a producer, but Sonny Digital, Seddy Hendrinx. Man, me and Seddy got some music but we gotta get some more. We gotta put something out. Those are all awesome dope artists.

I’ve heard that you’re a dedicated skydiver. So much so that it’s the name of your last album. Can you talk about that and how you even got into skydiving?

I just wanted to jump out of a plane and know what I was doing. It was really simple. It’s not until you start overthinking that you start asking a lot of obvious questions, and then you get scared. But it was really simple, you just gotta take that leap. That’s what the project is about, taking that leap of faith and just committing to whatever you put your mind to. I was basically saying, we’ll see if the parachute opens. I love skydiving. I like the fact that I know I can jump out of a plane and I know what to do and I know how to land safely.

Rumour has it there might be another album on the way. Any giveaways on features or spoilers?

Yeah me and my brother, Buddy Red. We’ve been locked in working on something. He has such a unique sound, I feel like people will be excited to hear what we have put together. I’m a Project artist man, I can’t wait for the project. I will say it’s done and anything that will be changed will be in addition to what it already is. But yeah the project is done. The project is ready to be shipped out to the world.

We’re ready. You’ve already debuted on the Billboard Top 10, which is a huge achievement. Do you have any goals for the next project or even with upcoming singles that you want to achieve?

I want to put this project out and be able to see how the whole world relates and experiences it. A lot of people put out a project and sometimes don’t tour or only tour in one part of the world. I want to be able to travel and see how the music resonates with everyone around the world.

That’s my goal with this project right here. To be able to travel the world and get to experience how everyone else is enjoying the music.

Yeah, that’s so dope. Of course, you receive a lot of support from your hometown, Atlanta. How do people react differently, depending on which city you perform it?

That’s a great question. I went to Europe first and seeing how y’all reacted and y’all just love good music. Y’all got good taste and when y’all hear good music, even when y’all don’t know the artist, y’all get moving, mosh-pitting and dancing.

It’s the same in Africa. Even if they don’t know the artist, depending on how good your music is, you could be a superstar, even if you’re not a superstar. I feel like anywhere overseas, they’re just dancing and moving a lot more and ready to have fun. In the US, they’re definitely watching you. They’re watching you. They’re critiquing you. It’s a tough crowd out here but I feel like that’s what builds the dope artists that we have.

If you could give a piece of advice to either a younger you or an upcoming artist who wants to get to your position, obviously, you’re still very young. What would you say?

Make sure you love what you do and then everything else will be worth it. A lot of people do something for the wrong reason and they don’t get that. They feel like they wasted their time. That’s because they didn’t love what they were doing. But if you love what you’re doing, you having a good time while you’re doing it regardless of what happens. So that’s a big one. That’s what I will say.
