Last night (Monday 21st November), the Grime A Side finals took place at ProDirect LDN19 in Soho which I had the pleasure of attending. Once again, shouts out to Iris Herscovici. The London Flagship store was transformed into a battle ground for the finalists representing Derby and Leicester.
The event was live streamed by Red Bull and viewers were involved in voting and choosing a winner. It started with a coin toss that allowed Team Derby to choose whether they went first or second. They opted for the latter and so Team Leicester took to the stage first. The whole battle consisted of absolute pure fire spewing from every competitor’s mouth with no one being benign from ridicule or their imminent comeuppance.
Team Derby ended up taking the trophy home with 54% of the votes. Derby team member Eyez was also voted as the Man of the Match. When I asked him about his win he said he was “over the moon and real gassed.” He also stated that he felt “that we done really well but there’s always room for improvement and we’re the smallest city so it’s really satisfying.” There was also a sense of disbelief from the win as he also said “I can’t believe we did it as well”. He also was a great sport and shouted out Team Leicester for their amazing effort.
Other attendees described the event as “successful and different.” Andrew who works at Pro Direct said “Obviously we’ve had things like this including Lord Of The Mics but this allowed raw and new talent from all over the UK to have a platform to have larger opportunities open for them.”
To conclude, it was great night full of energy and positive vibes and an incredible boost for new and raw talent out there. Red Bull once again take the cake for a legendary occasion.
