Leaders of the new school, City Girls, gift fans with the release of their highly-anticipated “Twerkulator” single, as the beat’s sample – Afrika Bambataa and Soulsonice Force’s 1982 “Planet Rock” dance track – has finally cleared.
The QC signees have won the hearts of women globally with hit records that set a precedent for owning sex and femininity. JT and Yung Miami’s leaked “Twerkulator” track was demanded by fans, who have already kicked off the group’s campaign with a viral TikTok challenge.
Soon after the Miami duo’s debut in 2018, the world of female rap stepped forward again to flood the streets with an authentically liberating narrative, solely led by female voices. We’ve watched the likes of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP (Wet Ass P*ssy)” anthem bag three awards and even recently, emerging Bronx rapper, DreamDoll, is making waves with similar themes in her music.
Now that it’s finally here, the City Girls’ racy song is inevitably set to be a sensation in America’s strip-club scene.
The British Isles also have talents to offer, with the likes of Ivorian Doll breaking the ice to push a sound that is recognised as ‘Bad B’ music. Emerging rap acts, SYM WORLDD and Kaede, are also forwarding this movement which is quite an exciting cultural reset for our scene. However, it begs the question: Do we have a space that allows our female emcees and their music to flourish?
In the UK, can we accept and celebrate such music without a setting that’s equivalent to, perhaps, a Miami strip club? That is the real question. If Ivorian Doll’s “Rumours” can receive such a response from the British audience and allow her crossover potential, then surely it is time to properly house the modern wave of ‘Bad B’ rap right here, on our soil. ASAP.
