Congratulations to all acts — here’s tonight’s breakdown!
Tonight’s BRITs show was electric —we have just witnessed progression, passion and boldness, in all it’s glory. A wave of emotion has taken over as I reflect on the representation of our urban culture in past years. The examples of Black excellence, tonight on mainstream television, proved growth. We are surely excelling in our own right and sharing spaces with a sea of incredible industry figures!
Stormzy: Winner of Male Solo Artist 2020 & breath-taking live performance!
“To be the ‘Best Male’, I’ve got the most incredible females on my team. The ‘Best Male’ is nothing without these incredible females.” — Stormzy.
Stormzy gave us what we can usually expect from him and that is, absolute class — from his wardrobe to his acceptance speech.
Wins seem like nothing new for the rap giant. His epic performance saw rain falling ‘on his enemies’ and left the crowd astonished at such a vibrancy on stage.
Dave: Winner of MasterCard Album of the Year 2020 & powerful ‘Black’ performance!
“Everyone that comes from the place I come from, my young kings and queens chasing their dreams, you can do anything you put your mind to.” — Dave said as he accepted his award.
Dave must be protected at all costs. He proved why he deserved to win the Album of the Year. The 21-year old rapper, penned a powerful bonus verse for the performance of his song, Black. The lyrics addressed controversial issues including, the Grenfell tragedy, Meghan Markle’s portrayal in British media and Boris Johnson: “The truth is the Prime Minister is a real racist… the least racist is still racist.”
Congratulations to BRIT nominees D Block Europe and Burna Boy. Their nominations are a testament of how loud our voices are and how our culture cannot be ignored by the powers that be. Let us maintain the level of consciousness that we feel in these moments.
It is because we shined so brightly tonight, that the BRIT Awards 2020 has to be one for the books!
