Akala’s fourth album offers listeners a hard-hitting wave of turbulent rage with just under an hour’s worth of conscious arguments against bankers, colonialism and dictatorship, and an education on black history.
Technically speaking, his flow and lyricism is advanced as ever, and it’s easy to vibe for the entire offering without taking a break. For first time listeners it might come across as a little heavy, but The Thieves Banquet is a much-needed enlightenment for the current UK scene.
Catch Akala at XOYO (2 mins walk from Old Street station, east London) tomorrow, Monday 3rd June, in a one-off headline show to celebrate the release of the album. The rapper will be performing with a live band behind him, so make sure that this Monday night all roads lead to this show. Not to be missed – buy tickets here.
