Tinie Tempah, Skepta, Stormzy & Kano following truly amazing 2016, have put Grime and U.K Urban music in the nominations for the 2017 BRIT Awards, with seven nominations ahead of the UK’s most prestigious ceremony.
Last years omission of the Urban music from the Award ceremony led to hashtag ‘BritSoWhite’ trending on twitter, with people voicing their dissatisfaction and artists such as Krept and Konan addressing the issue on Channel 4 news:
This year, Skepta is amongst the top nominated artists – with three nominations, thanks to his fourth studio album Konnichiwa which went GOLD two months ago and literally shutdown Top Of The Pops at Christmas.
The 2016 Mercury Prize winner is up for the British Male Solo Artist alongside fellow Grime Artist Kano – with Craig David, David Bowie and Michael Kiwanuka completing the list.
“None of my G’s nominated for brits? are you taking the piss?, embarrassing” Yes Stormzy said that last year – and this year he’s up for the British Breakthrough Act alongside Skepta, Anne-Marie, Blossoms and Rag’n’Bone Man.
Kano‘s fifth studio album ‘Made In The Manor‘ was the Best Album at the MOBO Awards and now in with a chance of winning the Mastercard British Album Of The Year. Kano would have to beat the likes of Skepta‘s ‘Konnichiwa‘, The 1975 ‘s ‘I Like It When You Sleep For You Are Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It‘, David Bowie‘s ‘Blackstar‘ and Michael Kiwanuka‘s ‘Love & Hate‘.
Emeli Sandé, who is currently dating Hypo, has also been nominated British Solo Female Artist, following her amazing album.
Despite more urban nominations, many commentators have asked what more the likes of Giggs and Wretch 32 have to do to gain Brit nominations considering the success of both of their albums, when technically Stromzy’s “Shut Up” was in 2015 and he didn’t release an album last year.
