“With music I can say whatever I want”…KIERON BOOTHE is a 21 year old rapper from Newham, East London and I’m a huge fan! Kieron started making music in 2005/2006, however he only began taking music seriously in 2010 after he left school.
‘Versatile’ and ‘diverse’ were the words that Kieron Boothe used to describe himself as an artist, he then went on to compare his approach to music to his assignment briefs from studying art, “Gaining inspiration, developing the idea, working on it”. Being able to understand Kieron’s work process allows me to appreciate his music much more, this is because I am now able to realise, all that Kieron talks about in his songs come from something real, and then are elaborated on in different ways and directions.
When listening to Kieron Boothe’s tracks ‘All Yours’ and ‘Miley Cyrus’, I am able to hear how versatile Kieron really is. ‘All Yours’ is a more relaxing, jazzy track whereas ‘Miley Cyrus’ is an uptempo grime track. This lead me to ask Kieron, which beats he prefers to spit over. He explained to me that songs like ‘All Yours’ are easy for him to rap about his life and more personal situations but on the other hand he likes to make tracks that you can hear in raves and dance to like his ‘3 Wings and Chips’ and ‘Miley Cyrus’.
“How much is music an outlet for you?”, I asked Kieron this question because I felt that his song ‘Soul’ literally expresses exactly how he is feeling, what types of situations he is going through and shows how human he really is, which allows his audience to relate to him on a more personal level.
From being heavily inspired by U.K rap music to becoming a fan of Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West, Kieron’s lyrics have become more in depth through gaining a larger understanding and appreciation for music.
The songs that I have mentioned already are from Kieron Boothe’s ‘Still Life 2’. Kieron describes his Still Life 2 as a mixtape, with 21 short songs that are dedicated to his younger brother Kodi, because he gave Kieron the idea of 21 tracks being on the tape as Kieron’s 21st birthday was approaching.
Still Life 2, is easily one of my favourite U.K mixtapes. From the artwork which was also created by Kieron to the last track on the tape, the collective is a impactive listen and very entertaining.
“I want to be able to listen to my music” … Whilst talking to Kieron, he expressed that he is not in a rush to ‘blow’. I really loved this about Kieron because it showed me how different he is compared to many other artist who are in a hurry to be extremely rich and famous. Kieron Boothe came across very patient and extremely confident in his sound. I know his journey will be a successful one.
Finally I asked Kieron Boothe, when did he fall in love with music. He then explained to me that when he first started secondary school and was in year 7, he was asked to write a positive rap verse for a school performance, Kieron and his peers spent almost 2 month writing eight bars, but after the performance Kieron continued writing. He then began using Vertical DJ on his computer and would record his raps using a microphone that were attached to his headphones and hasn’t stopped recording since!
